I’m going to start this post with probably the worst thing to say about a post on watches. I am not a watch person. Now, before you hang me by my ears, let me quantify: I’m not a watch person because I am the biggest klutz in the world that I tend to break watches. It gets banged on walls, table corners – pretty much any hard surface. So, for me to actually own a watch, I would need the tanks of watches. Enter Luminox.

Luminox is a pretty hardcore and heavy duty watch. The US Navy SEALS use then so that should say a lot about the tenacity of this watch. The proof is with Nick North. He was the one who collaborated with Barry Cohen and Richard Timbo to develop Luminox. Barry Cohen, a watch industry veteran, came across a Swiss self-powered illumination system and knew that it would make watches more visible and easier to read in low or no light situations. He asked his friend Richard Timbo if he would like to join him. Luminox was born in 1989 (Lumi is Latin for light while Nox is Latin for night) In 1993, the Assistant RDT&E Officer for the Navy SEALs, Nick North, was asked to seek a more dependable watch for night missions and found the solution at a trade show where he discovered Luminox. He worked with Cohen to develop a watch specifically for them and a revolution was born.

Last October 2, LUMI-NOX Ambassador and retired US Navy SEAL, NICK NORTH recently paid Manila a visit to meet Special Ops groups and the press at the Ads Air Hangar.

He, together with Luminox founder, Barry Cohen, developed the original and very much in demand Luminox Navy SEAL Colormark 3050 series, which, to this day, are still employed and trusted by the SEALs. North was head of procurement for the US Navy SEALs (he served with the US Navy from 1970-1999) and as such, in 1993 collaborated on the series.

During the “LUMI-NOX presents Nick North” event held last October 2, North spoke of the special relationship between the SEALs and the Swiss-made, American-designed watch brand which goes back to 1989.

The amazing co-host of Asia’s Got Talent and WWF Philippines Ambassador, Marc Nelson hosted the event, which had Luminox Ambassadors, Gutsy Tuason and Asian Air Safari host Captain Joy Roa in attendance. Also in attendance were celebrities such as Dyan Castillejo, Victor Basa and Anthony Pangilinan and dignitaries such as Major General Joy Guillermo and BGen John Estabillo (ret.) of the Philippine Airforce; Aldrin Mercader, Special Investigator for the NBI and Commander Lued Lincuna GSC of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Of course Gabriele Boschi, the CEO of Brand Gateway, Inc. (the exclusive distributing company of Luminox watches) was thrilled to be hosting North in the Philippines and Anna Scherer, Marketing Manager for Luminox International, couldn’t have been happier with the great interest in North as he is very much key to Luminox’s undying popularity.

As expected, North had an abundance of “lived-to-tell” stories to share during this brief visit to Manila. This was his third time as he was based in Subic in 1972 and 1976. Being that he is also an Adjunct Professor of Homeland Security Emergency Management, a Certified Personal Fitness Specialist and a retired Navy SEAL), North had plenty to share with his audience, including what makes Luminox the preferred and trusted timepiece of the SEALs as well as some very interesting tid bits from his rather storied past!
